Canary – What is security?
Canary, a new security startup needed a name.
Traditional security is sold on fear, fear that creates the conditions for greater security and greater isolation from the community. Canary is creating a new category of security product which sees security as part of society. A security system that’s easy to use is inherently more connected and friendly.
Security is thought of as creating a barrier between you and the inherent dangers of the outside world. But this isolation is really the antithesis of security. Security comes from a deeper understanding of your environment, enhanced by information rather than silenced by a wall. Security is enhanced by your relationship and connection to your surroundings and to the community creating a consensus about acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
The name ‘Canary’ expressed a societal idea where species work together to detect danger. The agreement between people; who actively learn and share information about their surroundings, who preserve commonality is what we call society. Security needs to get more social, more aware of the impact of society upon each other. ‘Someone’s Home’ is an idea that opened up security to think about society as a whole.
Canary has raised $66.M to date and remains in the top two in the category of digital home security products
